Southern California Attorney Sentenced to 14 Months in $22 Million Kickback Scheme

Attorney Lee Mathis was sentenced to 14 months in federal prison for honest services mail fraud as a result of his role in a scheme that saw Mathis and another man, Fernando Valdes, pay kickbacks to providers for patient referrals to a company they co-owned, Los Angeles-based Foremost Shockwave Solutions. Mathis pleaded guilty to the charge in September, and will also have to pay over $35,000 in restitution. A 2015 indictment included nine counts against Mathis, Valdes, and Foremost, alleging the scheme resulted in over $22 million in submitted claims. Valdes pleaded guilty to a single conspiracy charge in 2017 and is scheduled to be sentenced Dec. 20.
