Medical Marketer Forfeits $126,808 in Conspiracy Case

John Pangelinan, a medical marketer and president of Board Med Inc., was ordered to forfeit $126,808 after pleading guilty to conspiracy to commit honest services mail fraud and health care fraud.

While the plea agreement has not been released, an indictment from April 2018 reveals Pangelinan allegedly conspired to pay doctors to recommend certain goods and services, as well as refer workers’ compensation patients to specific providers, receiving more than $143,550 in kickbacks from October 2015 to June 2016.

Pangelinan was not alone in the scheme, as Dr. Phong H. Tran pleaded guilty in 2018 to conspiracy to commit honest services mail fraud and health care fraud and is scheduled to be sentenced on August 12, 2019.

Pangelinan also allegedly worked with Hootan Melamed to fill prescriptions using his affiliations with The New Age Pharmaceuticals, Concierge Compounding Pharmaceuticals and Precise Compounding Pharmacy. Melamed has denied the allegations, and is scheduled to testify before a jury in November.

Additionally, Jean Picard plead guilty to paying kickbacks in January and is will be sentenced on September 9, 2019. Also involved, Johnathan Pena pleaded guilty to conspiracy for arranging the kickbacks and will be sentenced September 30, 2019.
