Canoga Park Man Arraigned on Three Felony Charges in California Workers’ Compensation Insurance Fraud Case

The California Department of Insurance (DOI) has announced that Alexander Cody Smith, 30, has been arraigned on three felony charges for worker’s compensation insurance fraud stemming from a claim made while working for Engen Enterprises Inc. Smith had claimed a back injury while lifting a bix in 2018, complaining of back pain and later adding a claim of neck pain.

Smith claimed to have no prior injuries. According to the DOI’s press release, investigators showed that Smith had lied about past injuries, receiving “excessive and unnecessary medical evaluations, treatments and temporary disability benefits,” adding up to over $38,000 in costs to the insurer.
